Bucharest Hackaton inside the EU Sparks for Climate: Citizens Hackaton Championship

UEFISCDI is organizing an online hackaton dedicated to citizens and researchers committed to the development of new solutions that address climate challenges. The hackathon is part of the EU Sparks for Climate: European Citizens Hackathon Championship, an initiative supported by the European Commission and aligned with the European knowledge valorisation policy and two of the European Missions: Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities and Adaptation to Climate Change.

The Championship consists of three phases: local hackathons organized by 22 EU locations, followed by training modules and coaching activities for the winning teams of these local hackathons, culminating in an EU final where teams will compete to be one of the three winning teams.

Timeline of the Championship
From May to June 2024, 22 virtual local hackathons will be held all over Europe. The teams participating in each local edition will develop technological and social innovation solutions, which will be evaluated by a jury. At the end of the local hackaton two winning teams will be selected to go to the next phase (44 in total).

In the the second phase the selected teams will receive a specific training and coaching program to sharpen their skills with learning modules on management, entrepreneurship, sustainability, social impact, research valorization and intellectual property.

The final phase of the Championship is a hybrid competition held in autumn, in Brussels, when the teams will present their solutions in front of an international jury and 3 winning teams will be selected to receive cash prizes (5,000€ for each winning team). They will also receive other incentives such as personalized mentoring, support for a crowdfunding campaign, access to the angel investor network and support to scale up their solution.

Bucharest hackaton
Set to take place online, between 19-22 of June, 2024, the Romanian edition of the hackaton will bring together mixed teams formed of citizens and researchers. Guided by facilitators, mentors, teachers and jury members, these multidisciplinary teams will go through a series of workshops to develop and prototype their solutions adapted to specific climate challenges

Program

The hackaton will last 16 hours divided in sessions on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoon and Saturday all day (19-22 June).
It will be structured into modules: team building, working sessions and pitching.
Challenges to be addressed have been proposed by the citizens in the registration form.
Teams will be formed of citizens (4-6) + researchers (1-2). They will be formed around similar themes described during registration process and experience. If citizens and researchers have already formed a team and identified a climate challenge they want to address, they can register as a team. Team assignments and the challenge they have to work on will be announced in the first day of the hackathon.
The teams will received support from facilitators and mentors during the hackaton.
The hackaton will be online. The used language will be English.
2 winning teams will pass to the coaching and training phase.

Challenges
For citizens to participate, the first step is to propose a challenge relevant to their community, city or region. In this way, through the competition they contribute to support the European Missions on Adaptation to Climate Change and Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities. Researchers will contribute with their expertise and by teaming up with citizens and joining forces they will help develop solutions to the assigned challenge.

EU Mission - Adaptation to Climate Change - It aims to help regions become resistant and resilient to challenges such as droughts, heat waves and floods.
EU Mission - Climate Neutral and Smart Cities - It aims to help cities and their citizens become climate neutral, keeping emissions low so as not to leave a footprint on the environment

While these EU Missions focus on addressing climate challenges, the Championship will contribute to create advancements in this regard. So, citizens are not required to frame their challenges within these missions, they are encouraged to propose climate issues that affect or will be relevant to their day-to-day lives.

All challenges proposed by the citizens will be evaluated and assessed by an evaluation committee in order to select those challenges that are most relevant for each location and assign them to the teams that will work on them.

Who can participate
Romanian citizens, minimum age 16, who are willing to develop new solutions to climate challenges.
Romanian researchers who are willing to contribute with their knowledge, expertise, background and research in relation to climate change.
No previous experience in hackathons or idea competitions is required. EU Sparks for Climate is open to everyone.

To participate, citizens must first present a climate challenge that they consider relevant to their community, city or region, while researchers must contribute with their expertise to team up with citizens and join forces to develop solutions. The hackathon, will use a proprietary methodology that will encourage networking, dynamization and innovation processes.

After proposing the challenge they consider most urgent or important and registering to participate in the hackathon, citizens will receive a notification informing them whether they have been selected or not. Those selected will receive all the information about the days, times, and duration of the hackathon.
